Tactic #10; Do it on the go!

Finally! The final post of the “Top 10 Tactics and Tools” series and we’re ending on a high note in conjunction with the Mobile World Congress. I’m going to let “guest quoter” Chamath Palihapitiya of Facebook set the table…

“Yesterday, in a session on ‘Mobile Communications 2.0′ at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Facebook’s VP of User Growth, Mobile and International Expansion Chamath Palihapitiya shared the social networking giant’s current mobile strategy and its plans for the future.

It was in this session that the company for the first time talked about its latest product, Facebook Zero, which is essentially a stripped down, text-only version of the mobile website for the social networking service. The product aims to give mobile carriers a way to offer a basic Facebook experience to their subscribers free of charge and later convert those users into premium data service customers.

We recorded the entire 16-minute session and uploaded it to our YouTube account – these are the highlights of the presentation:

– Facebook believes 2010 will be a watershed year for mobile
– The service is now actively used by more than 400 million people
– They want to make Facebook even more ubiquitous and reach billions of users
– 100 million users (25% of total number of users) actively uses Facebook’s mobile products at least once a month

The great thing is that it’s easy to do. I’m always harping about the value of blogging, but did you know that blogging has great benefit for the blogger as well, especially when it comes to ‘finding your voice’ and finding your passion. I started out writing about marketing, sales and technology for small business owners and other thought leaders. Over time, I realized that one of my targeted audiences is the marketing professional that is struggling to add social media to the mix. I’d like to think that few people have a better handle on what tactics and tools a person in that position might need to actually save time as they add additional marketing channels. While I do offer what I call a “social media integration” package for my customers, I’m announcing today that this series will now be available in the form of an online instructor-led [me!] training course called the Social Media Academy. In addition, there will also be a weekly podcast that focuses on social media tools as well as an ebook which is currently under development as “The Damn Good Social Media Guide”. Three Marketing Trends for 2011

When you communicate by telling a story, you influence people by helping them decide for themselves what the truth is.  That was the premise of the movie, Inception: the most powerful idea is one you are able to come to on your own (an application of the first rule of storytelling 101: show, don’t tell.)

Stories are told in “about us” pages, on YouTube and on blogs. This about us page from Top Secret Recipes, is an example of effective storytelling.  Todd Wilbur, the owner of the company, shares his struggle to replicate his favorite store and restaurant-bought foods using recipes he found online but was always disappointed in the results, so he set out to create recipes himself. He went from  being a guy who couldn’t hold a job to a becoming a best-selling author just as his bank account was about to run dry.  Even though the story is over 1,000 words long, it holds your attention, and in the end, you want to buy his recipe book, even if you don’t cook.

What if you sell something as simple as notebooks or pens?  How do you tell a story about a so simple a product? Look at what Moleskine or Shaeffer Pens have to say about their products and you’ll see how a great story can wrap itself around even simple office supply products.

5 Tips for Improving Your Social Customer Service

Back in the day, if you wanted support from a business, you had to go to where the business’s reps were. Be it via an 800 number, support forums, e-mail or chat, the business would set the rules about how quickly your inquiry was addressed.

But with social media growing as a real-time support channel, the picture looks quite different these days. Customers are taking back control, and businesses increasingly have to assist on consumers’ terms.

I chatted with a colleague of mine, Brian House of IBM, about the different types of people searching for social support, and we discovered that most can be put in one of two categories. The first is the “social media native.” These are people who use social media, specifically Twitter (Twitter), as their main point of contact with companies and brands. These types are social media-savvy and reach for Twitter to share their everyday thoughts and opinions, which often overlap with their use of products and sentiment about brands.

The second type is the “last resort social media user.” This type of customer is more dangerous to a business because she is likely frustrated with the brand’s traditional support channels and has resorted to the public forum of social media to voice negative sentiment. She is not happy and won’t hesitate to share her opinion with friends.

Social support is no longer a luxury, but a necessity in today’s business climate. It’s an opportunity to maintain engagement with the savvy users in category one and stay on top of potentially damaging chatter from those in category two.
